Das Missverständnis

Die Art und Weise, in der ich das Internet kennengelernt und mittlerweile zu verstehen glaube beisst sich arg mit dem allgemeinen Bild, das in der Öffentlichkeit dargestellt wird. Daraus resultiert ein großes Missverständnis vieler, die ebenfalls der Auffassung sind, das Internet zu verstehen und denen, die es wirklich tun.

Phrasen wie "das Internet macht dumm", "im Internet steht nur Mist" und "das hat doch nichts mit dem echten™ Leben zu tun" zeigen mir jedoch, dass ich zwar nicht zwangläufig mehr davon, allerdings etwas anderes unter "dem Internet" verstanden habe. 

Meiner Auffassung nach bildet das Konzept des Internets sowie die derzeitige Ausprägung davon sowohl die Grundlage für vollständig neue Konzepte von Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft, als auch einen derart guten Spiegel des jetztigen Status Quo der drei eben genannten Bereiche, dass ich es letztendlich nicht vermeiden kann jetzt und hier darüber zu schreiben.

Das Internet ist ein Medium. Es hat weder Schuld, produziert Mist, noch macht es jemanden dumm. Es stellt ein völlig losgelöstes Universum vom echten™ Leben dar, welches, so man sich die derzeitige Lage anschaut, dennoch einen unvorstellbar großen Einfluß auf dieses echte™ Leben hat. Sei es nun direkt oder auch nur indirekt.

Der Dialog

Im Internet nimmt jeder auf dieselbe Art und Weise teil. Auf irgendeinem Weg erhält man letztendlich eine IP-Adresse, mit der man nun mit allen anderen Teilnehmern kommunizieren kann. Neben diversen Zusatzinformationen, die sich durch den Zugangsanbieter einschleichen ist die IP-Adresse damit aber auch, das einzige was einen Einzelnen von jedem Anderen unterscheidet. Prinzipiell ist also jeder dort gleich. Keine Nationalität, kein Alter, keine Hautfarbe.¹

Jeder steht im Dialog mit jedem anderen. Dabei ist vor allem der Dialog hervorzuheben. Jeder in Deutschland, der einen DSL-Anschluss besitzt, sollte sich darüber im Klaren sein, dass er die Möglichkeit besitzt mit einer Geschwindigkeit Daten ins Internet zu versenden, die die Geschwindigkeit des Datenempfangs eines 56k-Modems und selbst die von ISDN um eine Vielfaches übersteigt. Diese Kapazität dient nicht ausschließlich dem Hochladen von Urlaubsfotos bei StudiVZ, Flickr und anderen großen Konzernen. Sie dient dem direkten Dialog. Das Prinzip von Anbieter und Konsument, welches in der Wirtschaft bereits Jahrhunderte praktiziert wird, stellt das Internet vollkommen auf den Kopf. Jeder ist plötzlich gleichzeitig Konsument und Anbieter und zwar für jeden und ohne dabei notwendigerweise einen Mittelsmann zu Hilfe zu nehmen.

¹Und gerade bei diesen Dingen wird versucht sie im Internet doch unterscheidbar zu machen. Beste Beispiele sind wirtschaftlicher (YoutubeDeutschland) und politischer Natur (Zugangserschwerungsgesetz). Wir halten Inhalte von den Deutschen bei Youtube fern, so lange sie noch nicht für diesen Markt freigegeben sind und versuchen gerade unsere Kinder zu schützen (und natürlich auch alle anderen), dass sie nicht ausversehen im Internet auf Kinderpornographie stoßen. All das ist natürlich völlig widersinnig, denn die wirkliche Unterscheidung zwischen Altersgruppen und Nationalitäten kann so nicht durchgeführt werden. Sollte sie auch nicht. Probleme, die zu einer derartigen Lösung wie es durch das Zugangserschwerungsgesetz versucht wird geführt haben, lassen sich in dem Fall zunächst durch eine aufgeklärte und kompetente Bevölkerung lösen. Niemand, der der Bedienung des Internets mächtig ist, landet ausversehen auf Kinderpornographie. Für die Lösung des Kernproblems, das sie im Internet dennoch verfügbar sein kann, lässt sich eine sinnvollere Lösung finden. Dazu bedarf es natürlich erstmal dem Verständnis aller, warum die angedachte Lösung eine Symptombekämpfung und keine Problemlösung ist.

Informationsflut

Die Möglichkeit, dass jeder zu allen Dingen seine Meinung allen mitteilen kann, hat zwangsläufig zu einer Überflutung des Internets mit Inhalten von größtenteils minderer Qualität geführt. Doch was hat alle Welt erwartet? Fragt man den Bundesbürger auf der Straße nach seiner Meinung zu komplexen wirtschaftlichen Problemen, kann man sicher sein, dass keine fundierte Antwort zu Tage kommt. Es kommen gefärbte, verblendete und meistens schlichtweg falsche Informationen dabei heraus. All diese Informationen finden sich nun auch im Internet wieder und nicht nur in den Köpfen von Menschen, die sonst niemand gefragt hätte. Daraus ergeben sich zwei Kernaspekte:

Erstens ist keine dieser Informationen nutzlos. Denn obwohl keinerlei sachlicher Gehalt in Ihnen stecken mag, stellen sie doch häufig, sofern ernstgemeint, die Gefühle eines Menschen dar. Es ist nur niemand da, der diese Emotionen bündelt und sie in einen sachlichen Kontext stellt. Zumindest niemand, der das mit guten, nicht profitorientierten Gedanken angeht.

Zweitens haben diese Informationen einen fatalen Nebeneffekt. Völlig fehlinformierte Menschen mischen sich mit sehr wohl und gut informierten Menschen im Internet und produzieren neue Informationen. Ein Bruchteil der Teilnehmer im Internet kann aber fundierte und sachlich richtige Informationen von den Enten unterscheiden. Gut informierte Besucher im Internet können also auch absichtlich Fehlinformationen platzieren. Wer hätte das gedacht?

Das Vertrauen, was ein Mensch zu seinem näheren persönlichen, echten™ Umfeld aufbaut, braucht Wochen, Monate, wenn nicht sogar Jahre. Es braucht Diskussionen, Emotionen, Streit, Gestik, Mimik und am Ende prüft man gegebenenfalls die Informationen seines Gegenübers doch noch mal nach um auch wirklich sicher zu gehen, dass sich derjenige nicht geirrt hat. Im Internet scheint eine Vielzahl an Teilnehmern diesen Prozess vollständig über Bord geworfen zu haben.

Vertrauen und so...

Als krassestes Beispiel bietet sich da die vergangene Bundestagswahl an: Fernsehreporter weisen noch kurz vor der Verkündung der ersten Wahlprognosen darauf hin, dass den Informationen auf Twitter kein Glauben zu schenken ist.

Natürlich nicht! Warum auch? Das lose Netzwerk aus Hashtags und Pseudonymen, ohne auch nur die geringste Art der Verifizierung der Authentizität der Nachrichten seines Gegenübers, ohne auch nur den Hauch einer Spur von persönlichem Kontakt, soll zuverlässige Wahlprognosen liefern? Wer in Gottes Namen hat allen Menschen erzählt das wäre so? Niemand!

Viel problematischer ist, dass niemand Ihnen die Risiken, die Möglichkeiten und Prinzipien des Internets verständlich und nachvollziehbar klargemacht hat. Keiner in Schulen Unterricht zum Thema private und sichere Kommunikation über das Internet anbietet. Vor allem frage ich mich aber, warum diejenigen, die in dem selben Umfang wie ich sich mit der Thematik sich beschäftigt haben, nicht schon früher darum gekümmert haben, dieses Wissen in einer Form an andere weiterzugeben, die angemessen ist und eine "von oben herab"-Form vermeidet.

Ich selbst habe das ja bis jetzt auch nicht gemacht, dennoch stoße ich in meinem Umfeld auch auf Menschen, die diesen Status auch lieber aufrecht erhalten wollen, als ihn zu beseitigen. Schade.

Ein Bekenntnis, eine Erkenntnis und eine Aufforderung

Ich habe mich aus Politik, aus Wirtschaft und aus der Gesellschaft herausgehalten. Doch gerade in der heutigen Zeit in der jeder das Internet zu nutzen scheint und es offenkundig ist, dass nur wenige es verstanden haben, muss auf die wahren Möglichkeiten, neben all den Spielereien und kommerziellen Diensten, hingewiesen werden.

Hinter Konstrukten wie der Piratenpartei steht nicht der Wille der "Internet-Natives" sich jetzt auch mal mit Politik zu beschäftigen, sondern vielmehr eine komplette Bewegung. Eine Bewegung, die in der Politik vielleicht derzeit Ihren Aufschwung und die Präsenz in den restlichen Submedien erlangt, dennoch aber im Kern weder politischer, noch wirtschaftlicher, noch gesellschaftlicher Natur ist. Sie ist schlicht und ergreifend menschlicher Natur. Sie entsteht aus der Erkenntnis des Potenzials des Internets, zur prinzipiellen Verbindung und Vernetzung jedes Bewohners dieser Erde. Des Dialogs aller dieser Teilnehmer, der Möglichkeit zu vollkommen neuen Gedanken zu Demokratie, zu wirtschaftlichen Prozessen und vor allem zu dem was letztendlich wirklich jeden betrifft die Gesellschaft in der wir alle Leben.

Zu letzterem finde ich das Projekt "dieGesellschafter" auch sehr schön, auch wenn ich sagen muss, dass sich mir dabei noch nicht erschließt wie dort zu einem Ergebnis gefunden wird. Dennoch ist das erst der Anfang. Im Falle der Piratenpartei zeigt sich das Konzept relativ eindrucksvoll durch das Sprießen von Piratenparteien über den gesamten Globus. Alle folgen demselben Kernziel, offensichtlich zunächst einmal dem weiteren Einschränken der Möglichkeiten des Internets Einhalt zu gebieten und ein kompetenter Partner in weiteren Entscheidungen zu sein und langfristig die Konzepte von demokratischer Politik im Informationszeitalter zu überdenken. Das bedeutet für jede Piratenpartei in jedem Land eine unterschiedliche Lokalpolitik, die letztendlich aber dem Zwecke dient einen transparenteren Staat zu erwirken und über neue Konzepte der Einflussnahme eines jeden Bürgers nachzudenken. Daraus sollen natürlich Standpunkte zu allen anderen politischen Themen erwachsen, die alle von Neuem ein Problem beleuchten.

Wirtschaftlich sehe ich persönlich eher eine Dezentralisierung, eine Art neues Selbstversorgertum. Erneuerbare Energien schön und gut, aber die Energieerzeuger™ davon zu überzeugen, dass sie doch Rücksicht auf die Konsumenten nehmen sollten, ist wie einen Hund den langersehnten Knochen abnehmen wollen. Häuser lassen sich per Erdwärme, Solar, whatever mit Strom versorgen. Das wäre dann ein Stück Unabhängigkeit.

Do-It Yourself kommt wieder, nur diesmal ohne billig zu wirken, sondern mit der Qualität, die an Fabrikware herankommt und zudem noch eine viel entscheidenderen Faktor der Ware wieder zurückgibt: Einzigartigkeit. In einer Welt in der Massenware jedem nicht nur zugänglich, sondern sogar aufgedrängt wird, ist ein Unikat König.

Die Gesellschaft braucht wiederum nun Beides, sowohl eine Änderung der Politik und der Wirtschaft um wieder Mut zu fassen sich überhaupt noch in Irgendetwas einbringen zu wollen. Vielleicht ein typisches Henne-Ei-Problem. Dennoch setzt eine solche Verlagerung der Entscheidungsgewalt und Verantwortung zurück auf den Einzelnen ein genügendes Maß an Selbstvertrauen, Selbstbewusstsein, Selbsteinschätzung und vor allem und das ist wahrscheinlich das Komplizierteste, ein kontrolliertes Konsumverhalten voraus.

Die Bewegung von der ich spreche lässt sich überhaupt nicht unter einen Hut bringen und ich werde sicher dem Einen oder Anderen wieder auf die Füße treten, da er sich nicht repräsentiert fühlt. Das ist allerdings auch der Kern dieser Bewegung, niemand davon möchte sich wirklich ein Stempel aufdrücken lassen. Manche nennen sich jetzt Piraten und bereuen es gleich wieder. Im Kern einen sie sich nur durch Erkenntnis und den Willen dem Volk wieder seine Stimme zurückzugeben. Ein Gegenpol zu einer sich immer weiter vom Bürger entfernenden Machtelite zu bilden. Ein Instrument, welches als essentiell dabei gilt, ist und bleibt das

Internet.

Hach wie pathetisch, klicken für den Weltfrieden, nein im Ernst. Wenn Ihr auch nur ansatzweise nachvollziehen könnt, was ich hier von mir gegeben habe, dann geht raus und proklamiert die Hoffnung, die Möglichkeiten und brecht endlich diese verdammte Komplexität herunter und erklärt allen Anderen auf Logo™-Niveau was das mit dem Internet auf sich hat.

I will write this last post in english and german as I think it might be better to use two separate blogs for each language. I will stick with german for this one an add another posterous blog for the english posts. I will not write each post in both languages. The german blog will target a different audience as the english one will. On the german side there will be some local topics that have no purpose when written in english. On the other hand there will be some really nerdy post on the english side. Hope to see you all following the one you like better, or at best both.

Ich schreibe diesen letzten Post in deutsch und englisch, da ich es für besser halte zwei separate Blogs für jede Sprache zu führen. Ich werde diesen hier in deutsch halten und einen weiteren auf Posterous für die englischen Posts einrichten. Ich werde nicht jeden Blogpost in beiden Sprachen schreiben. Der deutsche Blog wird eine andere Zielgruppe als als der Englische anpeilen. Auf der deutschen Seite wird es lokalbezogene Artikel geben, die in englisch keinerlei Relevanz haben würden. Auf der anderen Seite wird es einige ziemlich verspulte Artikel in englisch geben. Ich hoffe alle von euch folgen mir weiterhin auf einem oder am besten sogar beiden.

The last post, was directed at the recent Accusations of Lily Allen against filesharers. While it may be a bit harsh to accuse her as well, It represents the way I feel about this whole filesharing debate. I love music, I appreciate the effort that is being put into new music, but I cannot afford all the music I listen to right now. I try to support the artists I like everywhere I can, buy T-Shirts, go to Concerts etc. Should I earn more money in the future, I'll try to spend as much as I can for Artists that influenced the way I live since I was a little child.

The way the music industry (and not the artists since they just recently started to take part in this public debate) acts towards their customers is something that gives you the expression impression that listening to a lot of music is something that can only be possible with loads of money. The reason for being that kind of enthusiastic and willing to pay for music originates from the possibilities given to me by the internet. Recommendations from other music enthusiast gave their knowledge to others and showed me artists and bands I've never heard of and still haven't heard on public radio oder or tv-stations. The Internet and especially filesharing made it possible for unknown bands without a major label to gain an audience and be invited to festivals all over the world. Having the possibility to earn money from services (like live-performances) and physical goods, like cds, vinyls and merchandising. The Internet gives each artist the possibility to share their music with everyone without the need for a factory to produce records or a logistic industry to deliver the records to each of their customers. The original idea of the music industry has to be rethought when it comes to the internet.

Labels should at first be small networks for a handful of artists that might share the same thoughts or do music for the same reasons. Artists should use the possibility to talk to their fans directly and get their feedback in the same manner. The real way to stop people from sharing "illegally" is to have every customer recognize and respect the copyright(or copyleft) of each artists. On the other hand should each artist, new and old ones know about the fact, that there's an alternative to the widespread copyright. Inventions like Creative Commons should be a real option for young artists to share their music while still having the possibility to gain money from it. Not every artists would want his works to be spread for free on the internet. A lot might want to keep their music copyrighted. Customers need to learn to respect that and everyone needs to take care that the rights of owners are being respected even in the vast Peer-to-Peer networks. Artists should have their own voice when their music gets "illegaly" shared withing P2P networks, so that every filesharer feels guilty when breaking with the personal right of the artist. It may seem illusionary that every customer acts responsibly when it comes to the copyright, but persecuting each and every filesharer will certainly not have the expected effect. 

Creative Commons tries to give artists an opportunity to decide under which Restrictions people can share and alter their music. A simple building-blocks like system for Licenses tries to make it clear for both artists and customers how one can work with this kind of product. While the customer has a lot of rights concerning sharing and altering, Creative Commons tries to stress the importance of the artist's rights he retains. 

To cut the matter short: Neither the current way of distributing music, with a music industry spending a lot of money on lawsuits against filesharers and a mass of people not knowing and eventually disrespecting the copyrights of the artists, nor the GNU-like way of "everything has to be free" can be an option. Artists have to keep their right to decide for themselves whether they want their works to be shared freely or copyrighted. Consumers need to realize the fact that breaking with the copyright of the artist is like a punch in their face, but they also need to be given the opportunity to punch them in the face when they get ripped off.

There needs to be a dialogue between artists and their fans and customers and not between the customers and the music industry telling them "you're doing harm to the artists, when sharing illegally". Harness the power of the Internet, get rid of the distance between customer and artists, it might help both to understand each others needs and rights.

I found a nice example that nearly fits into this "artist - consumer dialogue" in the comments section of the FAC website. The FAC represents a lot of artists, that marks a first step into the right direction. Artists want their rights to be respected by both the industry and the customers. But the FAC just agreed with the british government to throttle the bandwidth of "illegal" filesharers which made a lot of people rethink their stance towards the FAC. Ola B.'s comment got my attention as he points out the current problems and make this debate what it should be "emotional and direct". Music is both a business and a part of the culture.

I was at Radiohead show last month, it was in Poznań. Thank you Mr. O'Brien, if you read this, (and the same thank you's for the rest of the Band of course) for one of the best live music experiences I've ever had :)

The ticket was quite expensive for me, as I'm still a student with no work... But I know, and had known it before the gig, that I'd spend my last money on music, supporting all of the musicians I respect and whose music I love.

I'm not British, so this whole bandwidth resticting won't affect me... yet, let's see how it's gonna be like in Poland in a few years. But I'm really sad  about the FAC statement... Of course, I'm not a musician, I guess I maybe shouldn't express my opinion here, cause I have really no idea about artists problems of making a living from their work...

All I want to say is I love music and I support artists as much as I can... But I can't afford, and in my opinion, no one who's a huge music fan could afford paying for ALL the music he/she loves. My music taste, all of the CDs and vinyls I bought, all of the shows I've been to are the effect of file-sharing. My favorite artists were discovered by me thanks to other music enthusiasts and P2P users. I've financially supported all of my favorite performers in some way, maybe not us much as they deserve, but as much as I simply could. And I'm gonna still do it in the future.

Of course, I can see how file-sharing can be dangerous for many artists, but there's also the other side of this issue. This is really the best and the cheapest way for the musicians to get heard. Maybe they lose huge amounts of money but they also get many new listeners willing to pay for their work. It's impossible to tell if file-sharing is bigger threat than a chance for artists and without any good research we just can't judge it. So I guess all we can do now is to accept pluses and minuses of file-sharing.

Again, I'm not a musician and I can't even imagine how the survival in this branch looks like. But it's without a doubt that all of the FAC members are huge music fans, just like I am, and other people speaking their minds here are. Please, just try to imagine how we feel about the whole issue. We feel restricted. I want to broaden my horizons, find new exciting things, experience the real culture, not the 'so called music' which is 90% of what we can hear on the radio. I keep on repeating myself here, but I pay for all I can, the rest of it I can't simply afford NOW but I'll do my best to do it in the future. If it makes me a thief, then OK, call me a thief, I won't protest.

I strongly believe there are other solutions of this problem - file-sharing won't never end as the technology gives filesharers new possibilities all the time. CD prices? New business models?  There are many other solutions to talk over...

I call upon all of the music fans not to be childish talking about boycotts of FAC members... If we want to have right to broaden our music horizons, then let the artists have right to make a living of what they love. If you liked Lily Allen's music and now you say you won't ever listen to her, you hurt yourself much more than Lily.

Mr. O'Brien, as you are the only artist from FAC whose music I ever downloaded and I really enjoy, I'd like to assure you I'd do anything to support your work. And I'm sure there many, many more people who think the same. Just give me some time, cause it seems my appetite for amazing art grows faster than money in my wallet :) The last thing: in 2007 in some magazine there was an interview with Radiohead, based on fan questions. My question was asked, and it was also about file sharing. Your band mate, Colin Greenwood, said in this interview something I'll never forget, something about critcising file-sharing: "You're forgetting what music is all about: excitement and talent and artists doing cool new things that people are into. That's what record companies had forgotten about. they were worrying about all these ancillary questions and forgetting about the primal urge of people to share and enjoy music. And there's always going to be a way of finding money or livings to be made out of it." 

I'm still a supporter of FAC and I wish all of the artists and all of the music fans to find a solution which is the best for everyone. Hope it'll be gained in a spirit of mutual respect and without offending any artists by their listeners and vice versa.

In a way I really would like to calm down right now but somethings keeps pushing me on and on. Elections on 27.9 ... propaganda, campaigning all over the country. Although my only concern is the presentation today. Get it done, calm down, finish the whole work and relax again. There isn't any time to relax but I try to fool myself into believing there might be some.

Do something; even random. Make some NOISE, proclaim new states, raze them again. Invent the time machine just to produce a discussion with the outcome of not using it for certain reasons. Please bring your own pillows, we haven't got any spare.

Renew the school-system, nobody gets out of it. Well you get out, but the price you pay... don't believe it's getting better in the end!

Pretty evil, but true.

Since I really like the video, the message and the music itself, I wanted to write about it. A twitter post or a simple Blip wasn’t enough to explain what I think about it.

Especially the phrase about the rich and mighty ones is pretty striking. We all got to realize that the ones who’re in charge don’t respect us and they don’t fear us. So while all the people hate for themselves, they got nothing to put the hate onto.

While in this song Jochen Distelmeyer claims to be not like you, I would agree with what he’s trying to say. Living and feeling like cattle, bowing to the mass media and the government, all that nourishes the hate of each of the people he’s talking about. So we end up with the some, who flee from this messed up society-thingy on the one hand and the crouching, vegetating mass on the other, which both just share the hate with no target.

All these thoughts are just random. I don’t know if you can follow or understand. But for those of you, who do, even just a tiny little bit: face the facts, although I’d love to dream that

We, the public, should put an end to it.

like Richard Stallman said in a completely different context about the War on sharing, the public just won’t do it.

So in order to make the best out of it, I ask these blinded people to yell and shout at me. I want them to provoke and influence me. In a way I just can say
